ResumoAbstract Prostaglandin E 2 has been examined in laboratory animals for possible antifertility and luteolytic properties. Daily subcutaneous injections from Days 4–6 into hamsters (once a day) and from Days 4–7 into rats (twice daily) resulted in termination of pregnancy. The treatment caused degeneration of corpora lutea and a sharp decrease in the serum concentration of progesterone. Exogenous administration of progesterone protected the pregnancy, but did not prevent degeneration of corpora lutea. It is concluded that PG E 2 has antifertility and luteolytic properties although it is less potent in this respect than F 2 α.
