ResumoFour species a r e listed, two of them new records fo r New Zealand. In March, 1965, Lepidosaphes machili (Maskell) was identified on orchids from Hastings. As a result of a survey carried out in June and July, 1965, to discover the extent of the establishment of this species on commercially grown hothouse orchids, four armoured scale insects were identified a s pests of various species of orchids. All four species a r e illustrated and described by Ferris (1937-1942). Aspidiotus hederae (Vallot) This was the most frequently encountered species, collected from Cymbidium spp. in Auckland, Dunedin, Hastings, Levin, Palmerston North and Tauranga. Taken from the leaves and pseudo bulb. This species was recorded by Maskell (1887) a s not widely distributed in New Zealand. Diaspis boisduvali Signoret Collected on Cymbidium spp. in Hastings and Levin and on Cattleya sp. f rom Auckland and Tauranga. Taken on the leaves. This was referred to by Maskell in 1887 as a pest in hothouses. Lepidosaphes machili (Maskell) First collected 6.3.65 on Cymbidium sp. f rom Hastings (Collector J. Porter) . During the survey it was found on Cymbidium spp. f rom Auckland, Christchurch, Hastings, Palmerston North, Tauranga, Titoki, Wanganui and Whangarei. Taken on leaves and pseudo bulbs. I believe this to be the first record of this insect a s established in New Zealand. I t has several times been intercepted on orchids from Australia. Pseudioparlatoria parlatotrioides (Comstock) This species was collected in Hastings on Cyprepsdium sp. leaves 15.7.65 (collector G. M. Cartwright). This is the first record of the species in New Zealand.
