That De Chirico occupies an important place in the history of twentieth-century art is indisputable. Yet it is astonishing how little is known about his work. “Even those who love me really do not understand me,” De Chirico has stated.1 Although the enigma that surrounds him is partly of his own making, it is also due to unadventurous reflection upon his work.
