Resumo

I deeply appreciate the privilege of presenting the G. Paul Moore lecture. It is customary in this format to discuss an area of scientific interest reflecting one's philosophy and achievements. I must admit to some hesitancy in attempting to make profound statements of my philosophy for fear of being taken too seriously. I am reminded of Lucy—in her philosophical mode—lying on a hillside with Charlie Brown, gazing at the nighttime sky, and reflecting: "Isn't it beautiful? Why, you can see in the stars outlines of the great wonders of the world, the ruins of ancient civilizations, and the expansion of the universe. What do you see Charlie Brown?" CB: "Well, I was going to say I saw horsies and bunny rabbits, but I changed my mind." Rather than reflecting on my achievements, I would like to focus on observations, especially mistakes, that have provided me with lessons in phonosurgery.
