Resumo

In a 2200-km2 area in the lower Ucayali River, eleven types of vegetation have been determined: ten are forests and one is floating meadows (aquatic macrophytes). Forest ecosystems cover 2133 km2 (97%) of which 1335 km2 (61%) are wetlands with six types of forests, two under the influence of local rainfall and the other four related to the flooding pattern of the Ucayali River. Fifteen villages are located in the study area, twelve of them in flooding areas. Most of the economic activities of approximately 1000 families are carried on in forested wetlands. the methodology of this study is explained. A discussion on the relationships between flooding patterns, forest vegetation types and land use in included. Proposals for further research are made.
