ResumoAbstract Auger-electron spectroscopy (AES) and electron-energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) have been used to study in detail the oxygen adsorption and the initial oxidation on the surface of polycrystalline indium. The results reveal that at an oxygen exposure of 1000 L a rapid transformation has been observed from an In-like phase to an In 2 O 3 phase and an oxide layer of − 1 ML is formed. Subsequently, growth of this oxide is detected at oxygen exposures above 10 000 L.
