Resumo

The surface core level shifts have been studied in La, Yb, Yb on Au and Yb on Ag using HeIIα excited photoelectron spectroscopy. It is shown that the shifts can be interpreted within a model originally devised for calculatingsurface segregation energies. In the La 5p32 spectrum a surface shift of 0.48 eV is observed. When depositing Yb on Au and Ag a strong interdiffusion is observed and both bulk and surface compounds are seen. It is shown that the surface core level shifts can be used to discuss what types of surface compounds are formed.
