ResumoIn this paper we apply the methods of linear response theory for analyzing the dynamics of flexible polymer molecules in a dilute solution. For simplicity, the analysis is limited to ring (closed chain) molecules. Our starting point is Kirkwood's generalized diffusion equation, from which we extract, with the aid of a proper projection operator, linear relaxation equations for the normal modes. These equations for the fluctuation dynamics of the molecule enable one to evaluate correlation function expressions for transport coefficients. The dynamical viscosity of a dilute polymer solution is evaluated according to this method. On the assumption of Gaussian statistics our results reduce to those derived from the Rouse-Zimm model.
