ResumoAbstract In a field trial early infection with watermelon mosaic virus (WMV) was shown to cause yield reductions in Buttercup squash (63%), Golden Hubbard squash (53%), and pumpkin (49%), but not in cucumber. WMV also caused a reduction in the size of Buttercup squash. No yield reduction was recorded with a late infection of WMV in any of the four cucurbit species used. Infected fruits of Golden Hubbard squash showed severe distortion and dark green mottling, whereas infected cucumbers showed only a fruit mottle late in the season. Fruits of infected Buttercup squash and pumpkin showed transient symptoms during development, but appeared normal at maturity.
