Resumo

An investigation was made of the effects of combined ultrahigh pressure and high temperature on the oxides of uranium with particular emphasis on U3O8. A new polymorph of U3O8, designated γ-U3O8, occurs at pressures in excess of 16,000 atm at temperatures above 400°C. At 60,000 atm the gamma U3O8 coexists with a cubic U4O9-like phase. These results, although of a preliminary nature, show that the uranium-oxygen phase diagram is greatly modified by the effects of pressure.
