ResumoCluster Sampling Technique (CST) is a powerful method for measuring the output stability of the ring laser gyro or any other oscillator in the time domain. The relationship between the cluster variance and the power spectral density of noise contained in the data is derived. The former, being a directly measurable quantity, can provide information on the types and magnitudes of various noise terms. Analytical expressions for the cluster variance are derived for a number of prominent noise terms that are known to affect the gyro performance. The technique is applied to a long-term drift run of a Honeywell gyro and various noise terms are determined.
