ResumoThe absorption and fluorescence spectra of anthracene in n-heptane, fluorene, and biphenyl matrices have been measured at 4°K. Both in the ground and 1B1u excited electronic states, eight ag and three b3g fundamentals have been assigned. Other possible fundamentals, including some nontotally symmetric modes allowed to appear by crystal forces, are indicated. Anharmonicity was detected only by the appearance of a number of examples of Fermi resonance between vibrational modes both in absorption and in fluorescence. No evidence for a second weak electronic transition was found.
