[Ni 8 Cl 4 (μ 4 -PPh) 6 (PPh 3 ) 4 ] (1) reacts with sodium amalgam to form [Ni 9 (PPh) 6 (PPh 3 ) 4 ] (2) and {[Ni 8 Hg(PPh) 6 (PPh 3 ) 4 ] · [Ni 8 (PPh) 6 (PPh 3 ) 4 ]} (3). 3 has been characterized by X-ray crystal structure analysis. It contains two distorted cubic Ni 8 -clusters. All faces of the cubes are occupied by μ 4 -PPh ligands. At one of the cubes one nickel atom is bonded to an external mercury atom. [Ni 8 Cl 2 S 6 (PPh 3 ) 6 ] (4) reacts with sodium amalgam to form [Ni 8 S 6 (PPh 3 ) 8 ] (5). In this symmetrical structure all nickel atoms are bonded to three S ligands and to one PPh 3 .
