MINUTES OF THE 1980 MEETINGS OF THE COMEDIANTES At the annual meeting of the MLA this past December in Houston, there were two sessions dealing specifically with the comedia. Both sessions were arranged and chaired by Professor Fred de Armas. At the Division meeting, papers were presented by Professors John Jay Allen, José A. Madrigal, Geoffrey M. Voght, and Henry W. Sullivan. At the other meeting, the topic of sexuality in the comedia was discussed by Professors Thomas A. O'Connor, Everett W. Hesse, William C. McCrary, and Susan Fischer. The comediantes banquet was held at the Houston Sheraton, and among those in attendance were: John J. Allen, Fred de Armas, W. R. Blue, Jean Chittenden, Denise DiPuccio, Patricia Finch, Susan Fischer, Ed Friedman, Charles Ganelin, Juan José García, Dan Heiple, Susana Hernández-Araico, Everett Hesse, Robert ter Horst, Harold Jones, Pat Kenworthy, Tony Madrigal, Adrienne Mandel, Oleh Mazur, Sandra Nielsen, Tom O'Connor, Jack Parker, Jim Parr, Anne Pasero, Joe Snow, Henry Sullivan, Vern Williamsen, and John Wooldridge. Following the dinner, the Executive Committee met, made nominations for the term beginning in 1982, and discussed several projects of possible future interest. Professor William R. Blue was confirmed as Chairman for 1981 and Professor Frank Casa was elected Secretary. José A. Madrigal was selected by the Executive Committee to serve as the 16th and 17th Century Spanish Drama Division Representative to the Delegate Assembly for a three year term (1981-83). Professor Blue announced that the topic for 1981 would be the theater of Calderón de la Barca. The Division will sponsor two sessions, as well as the banquet. At the first session, Professor Francisco Ruiz Ramón will present a paper on Calderonian tragedy, Professor Henry W. Sullivan will speak on Calderón's reception and influence abroad, and Professor James A. Parr will survey the state of the art of Calderonian criticism. For the second session, we invite papers on other aspects of Calderón's work. Four papers will be selected for presentation. Each paper will be (rigorously) limited to a maximum of ten minutes, because we would like this session to provide opportunity for general discussion of Calderón's theater and of the criticism of his works. Those who presented papers in the first session will be asked to participate in the discussi » 100Bulletin ofthe Comediantes sion in the second session. If you are interested in submitting a paper, please send an abstract, an outline, or, if possible, the complete paper to Professor William R. Blue, Department of Spanish and Portuguese, University of Kansas , Lawrence, Kansas 66045 by May 1. Professor Casa is in charge of the dinner in New York and will be contacting members about arrangements. Respectfully submitted, William R. Blue Secretary, 1980 ...
