This article reconstructs aspects of the environment of the past in Southern Minas Gerais, especially in the Sapucaí river basin between the decades of 1870-1920, a time of transition from the diversified production of foodstuffs towards coffee export.The regional rural landscapes and their transformations constitute the focus of the investigation, which is based on various sources: narratives of naturalist-travelers of the 19 th and 20 th centuries, regional chroniclers' texts, regional press, official reports, inventories, testimonies of former residents and field work observations.
