ResumoMenstrual blood loss (MBL) was measured in women wearing three types of intrauterine devices (IUDs) at 6, 12, and 18 months post-insertion. Devices studied were the Lippes Loop D, the standard-size Dalkon Shield, and a copper T (TCu 300). Mean menstrual blood loss was increased from 41 to 112% by the devices. The incidence of menorrhagia increased as much as nine-fold over non-IUD, control cycles. The Lippes Loop and the Dalkon Shield were associated with fluctuating MBL values at the intervals studied, often double the levels in non-IUD cycles; whereas MBL with the TCu 300 was relatively stable at all study periods and lower than that experienced with the two other IUDs.
