ResumoThe oxidation of pulverulent CoO (ex Co(OH)2) into Co3O4 is a topotactic and pseudomorphic reaction. According to the degree of porosity and to the crystallite size of the original CoO oxide the reaction was found to proceed following two different mechanisms: monophasic or diphasic. From a textural point of view one must emphasize the following features: Co3O4 maintains the same porosity as the original CoO whereas the crystallite desorientation becomes more important. When this Co3O4 is submitted to a thermal treatment the porosity remains again identical; on the contrary, the crystallites are growing up.
