Resumo

Bernhard Schlink’s novel, The Reader, is both rite-of-passage tale and courtroom drama, but also something of a philosophical investigation, specifically into questions concerning the nature of freedom and responsibility, as well as the relation between law and emotion. The author focuses on the last of these. What sense are we to make of the injunction that the law be more feeling? The author considers two alternatives, the first of which amounts to a metaphysical claim, the second which treats the issue as a matter of style or attitude.
