ResumoThe concentrations of serotonin and norepinephrine were determined in the following regions of the developing cat brain: cerebellum, pons-medulla, hypothalamus-mesencephalon, thalamus, caudate nucleus, hippocampus and neocortex. Most of the brain regions investigated demonstrate a progressive accumulation of amines up to at least 1 year of age. The concentration of norepinephrine in the pons-medulla is high early in life but decreases between 1 and 3 months to adult levels. Each brain region shows a distinctive pattern of accumulation of amines. The maturation of the electroencephalogram and brain amine concentrations in cats and rabbits is compared with the conclusion that each species appears to have a characteristic sequence of development for the maturation process and that in a given species the maturational indices are not necessarily the same for different parameters.
