ResumoArthur Azevedo (1855-1908) was a remarkable Brazilian intellectual at the turn of the twentieth century: he was a founding member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters and also responsible for the foundation of the “Theatro Muncipal”. Arthur Azevedo had fought for the national theater project through the press, mainly in the newspaper “A Notícia”. Although had been approved by law since 1895, this theater opened only in 1909 in a different way from that which Arthur Azevedo had proposed: sponsored by the government, like Comedie-Française. It became a huge concert hall and was only in the 1930s that it acquired its own staff. The scope of this paper is to discuss the tensions and disputes in the cultural area at the time of Arthur Azevedo and also intends to analyze the speech of the dramaturgy related to a national theater of good quality, but also affordable to ordinary people.
