ResumoThe various reactions involved in the formation of organic films on iron surfaces have been investigated. The chemical nature, quantity and quality of these organic films and their relationship to the load-carrying properties and structural parameters of alkyl aryl sulphur derivatives, namely aryl—S, Alkyl—S and S—S bonds, have been studied. These studies reveal that polyhydroxy and ketonic aromatic derivatives of iron formed at rubbing surfaces play the major role in imparting extreme pressure properties rather than the quantity and ease of formation of iron sulphide by reaction of organic sulphides at iron surfaces.
