ResumoUlcerative colitis (UC) is occasionally complicated by massive hemorrhage. 1 Edwards FC Truelove SC The course and prognosis of ulcerative colitis. Gut. 1964; 5: 1-22 Crossref PubMed Scopus (296) Google Scholar Emergent surgery has been the treatment of first choice for such bleeding, as it has been for toxic megacolon and perforation. 1 Edwards FC Truelove SC The course and prognosis of ulcerative colitis. Gut. 1964; 5: 1-22 Crossref PubMed Scopus (296) Google Scholar Two cases of massive lower GI bleeding in patients with UC are reported here. In both, urgent endoscopy revealed actively bleeding visible vessels, and the hemorrhage was controlled by endoscopic application of clips. Few cases have been reported in which massive lower GI bleeding in patients with UC was treated endoscopically. 2 Hirana H Atsumi M Sawai N Ishimaru S Uehira H Hosoda M et al. A case of ulcerative colitis with local bleeding treated by endoscopic injection of absolute ethanol and 1% polidocanol. Emergent endoscopic therapy, instead of surgery, can be considered in certain patients with UC and massive colonic hemorrhage.
