ResumoBest known as one of the founding members of the Turtles, Mark Volman has had successful careers in and of music. Highly visible with his big head of busy hair, Volman had massive hits with the Turtles in the 1960s, including “It Ain’t Me Babe,” “She’d Rather Be with Me,” “Eleanor,” and, of course, “Happy Together.” After the band’s breakup, Mark and lead Turtle vocalist Howard Kaylan formed Flo & Eddie, releasing several albums as they developed into one of rock music’s foremost backing vocal teams, working alongside Frank Zappa, John Lennon, T. Rex, Alice Cooper, Steely Dan, Roger McGuinn, Keith Moon, Linda Ronstadt, Bruce Springsteen, the Psychedelic Furs, the Ramones, and many more. In 1992, Mark returned to school, graduated Loyola Marymount magna cum laude, and was the class valedictorian. At the conclusion of his address, he led the graduates in a sing-along of “Happy Together.”Today, Mark is a professor and chair of the Entertainment Industry Studies program at Belmont University, Nashville, TN. He still performs some 50 concerts a year with Kaylan as the Turtles featuring Flo & Eddie, whom he now manages. He is also a member of the editorial board of this journal. Below he talks about the Turtles, Flo & Eddie, Frank Zappa, the music industry, and his life as a professor. The interview took place as a special session at the Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association’s annual conference in Boston, April 2012.
