Resumo

ABSTRACT This paper explores the psychosocial consequences of parental mental illness for child mental health and the implications for mental health nursing. The literature on risk and vulnerability to psychosocial disorder, resilience, child protection, disorder prevention and epidemiological data are reviewed. Based upon a health promotion approach, a model for mental health nursing advocacy for families of adult consumers is proposed as an effective means of preventing disorder in subsequent generations.
