Resumo

The interpretation of (i) the interelement relationships of (Ta + Nb) and W or (Fe + Mn), (ii) Mössbauer spectrometric results on the oxidation state of Fe, and (iii) electron probe microanalysis of cassiterites reveal that coupled substitutions of the type 2 (Ta, Nb)5+ + (Fe, Mn)2+ = 3 Sn4+W6+ + 2 Fe3+ = 3 Sn4+Fe3+ + OH− = Sn4+ + O2− are dominant at least at the temperatures of formation of cassiterite. Additional replacements such as (Ta, Nb)4+ = Sn4+ cannot be ruled out. Aspects of the structural control on trace element distribution, and maintenance of electroneutrality of the crystal lattice are discussed.
