ResumoThe histology of the normal corium of the bovine foot is described. In acute laminitis in dairy cows the changes include hyperaemia, haemorrhage and thrombosis with oedema in the surounding tissues. A round cell infiltration occurs under the base of the laminae. In the laminae the onychogenic substance disappears and the cells of the stratum germinativum are disorientated with altered nuclear morphology. Chronic laminitis results in similar though more severe vascular changes and the laminae are compressed by extensive fibrous tissue formation in the corium. The pathological changes are suggestive of a stagnant hypoxia. The implications are discussed.
