ResumoThe inguinofemoral area is a complex zone that constitutes the frontier between the abdomen and the lower limb. In this region, the terminations of the flat muscles of the anterolateral abdominal wall determine two main routes of passage. One is superficial, for the spermatic cord in men or the round ligament in women; this is the inguinal canal. The other is deep, for the femoral pedicle; this is the femoral (crural) canal. In the standing position, the inguinal region is a zone, convex forward, supporting the abdominal thrust and weakened by the orifices of the inguinal and femoral passages.11 Peritoneal diverticula may progressively externalize into these orifices, leading to the formation of hernias (Fig. 1).
