Level populations of H2 in NGC 2023 are characterized by a high vibrational temperature (Tv > 3600K) and a low rotational temperature (Tr ≈ 900 - 1500K). This confirms the identification of the H2 emission as due to UV excitation followed by fluorescence. The observed para/ortho ratio of H2 is consistently larger than 1:3 and is estimated to be in the range 1 : (1.4 - 2.0).
