Resumo

Electrolyte imbalance may cause neuropsychiatric manifestations that closely mimic functional disorders. For example, depression may accompany hyponatremia, hypokalemia, hypercalcemia, or hypomagnesemia. A personality change such as increasing irritability may be a symptom of hypernatremia, hypercalcemia, hypocalcemia, hypophosphatemia, or hypomagnesemia. In most instances, correction of the underlying electrolyte imbalance will alleviate the psychiatric symptoms. By taking a careful history, the psychiatric consultant may note the symptoms of mineral imbalance before the problem is apparent to the attending physician.
