Abstract The purpose of this article has been to review the literature concerning the measurement of tongue and velopharyngeal valve function as visualized in lateral cephalometric radiographs. An analysis system based on the best of the measurements described in the literature has been proposed. The reasons for the selection of these measurements and the rejection of others are discussed.
