ResumoMaximum betacyanin accumulation was observed in the logarithmic phase of growth in suspension cultures of Phytolacca americana. The relationships between the growth, betacyanin accumulation and the initial phosphate concentration in the medium were found to be linear for phosphate concentrations in the range 0-1.25 mM.A close correlation between cell aggregate size and betacyanin accumulation was also observed. These results indicate that betacyanin in suspension cultures of Phytolacca americana shows a different accumulation pattern from most other secondary products, in being strongly affected by the growth.
