ResumoPerciformesfishes are mostly marine dwellers, leaving a few species which are fresh-water forms.Very probably, the latter may be secondarily adapted forms.Fishes of the genus Coreoperca (Serranidae, Percoidei) are members of the order Perciformes, several species having been recorded in Eastern Asia. The present study deals with the karyotype of two species, Coreoperca kawamebari and C. herzi, in an aim to inquire into the relation of karyotypic differentiation to evolution, in comparison with the other members of the suborder Percoidei, as well as of Teleost forms.C. kawamebari and C. herzi were obtained from the Ibo river of the Hyogo prefecture in Japan, and the Geum-cheon river of the Chungcheongnam-do province in South Korea, respectively.Four specimens of C. kawamebari and two specimens of C. herzi provided materials for this study. The two forms are easily distinguished from each other by the difference in the number of dosal, anal, pectoral fin rays and the lateral line scales (L.L.S.) as follows:Chromosome slides were prepared from kidney cells following the method devised by Oj ima et al. (1972).The nomenclature system of chromosomes according to Levan et al. (1964) was adopted. The chromosome number of C. kawamebari was determined as
