ResumoHepatitis B serological studies were carried out in 251 asymptomatic carriers of HBsAg living in an endemic rural area of Cachoeiro do Itapemirim (545 km distant from Rio de Janeiro) in order to evaluate this population as a potential source of blood plasma for hepatitis B vaccine production. A pilot study on HBsAg purification from plasma was also performed to estimate antigen yield.
