ResumoA likert-type instrument for measurement of humane caring has been developed since 1991. The purpose of this study was to describe the evaluation of the instrument's construct validity and its reliability by measuring the internal consistency of the instrument and its five domains. The data for assessment were collected from 758 patients. Factor analysis supported the background theory for three of the five domains. In one of the remaining two domains there was an irrelevant factor, which will be omitted from the domain, and the other domain will be renamed. Measured by Cronbach's alpha the instrument showed excellent consistency (alpha .92); the alphas for its subscales were good (.67-.83). The instrument is used to evaluate the quality of patient care in Finland at the Kuopio University Hospital and also at Iisalmi and Varkaus District Hospitals and in Switzerland.
