ResumoThis article presents evidence that hypocrisy is nothing other than a special form of situational irony.Acognitive model of hypocrisy judgments is described and its plausibility assessed. This view of hypocrisy is contrasted with previous characterizations of hypocrisy from the psychological and philosophical literature, in which no connection between hypocrisy and irony has been explored. The article offers some explanations as to why it is plausible that hypocrisy should occur as a kind of irony, and why the connection is not self-evident. It is also speculated that the hypocrisy is morally egregious because the irony involved tends to result in violations of distributive justice. Directions for future research are discussed.
