Resumo

Life [in Progress] (2008- ) is composed of written, photo, and video instructions for actions ranging from love, friendship, memories, visions, desires, to political and religious feelings, boredom, passivity etc. Some of the works have been translations of artworks from 20th century into simple actions one can easily do without having any knowledge about art history. The project displays the basic difference between performing and visual arts. In performing arts there are the authors and institutions that control the time of performance, while in visual arts the spectator is in control. Instructions can also be read as literature and perform and visualize in reader's imagination. In the actual room, the venue of the installation, the spectators are also the actors; walking past the instructions they create the performance according to their own rhythm, sensibility, belief, and (non- responsiveness. The performance takes place when the visitors decide, and the spectator emerges as the terminal “spectActor”, a spectator and actor in one. Series of photos published here follow lives of mothers and babies. They literary document life in progress. Janša's recent works are focused on phenomena that need time to happen. It is not constructed time, extended or durational time, but physical time one cannot ignore or avoid. One cannot accelerate; one cannot compress time of this work. One needs to wait. One has to take a risk and wait until the very last moment and might be surprised by a birth happening before it would be planned. You work with time. Time is not against you, time works for you.
