ResumoAqueous extracts of 3.0 mg of defatted bovine pineal powder, containing an estimated 0.0035 μg of melatonin, were injected into young adult, Charles River CD-1 mice on the day of unilateral ovariectomy. This treatment resulted in inhibition of compensatory ovarian hypertrophy (COH) that was comparable to the antigonadotropic effects of 30.0 μg of crystalline melatonin injected in the same manner. The biological activity was separated from melatonin by serial ultrafiltration and gel-filtration on Sephadex G-25. Antigonadotropic activity was concentrated in the melatonin-free, MW 500–1000 fraction that was observed to block COH at three dose levels.
