Animals to replace the mother's breast occupy a considerable place in art and literature. Perhaps the best known example is that of the bronze antique now in the Capitol Museum in Rome. It figures Romulus and Remus nursing at the dugs of a wolf. The succession of the kings of Alba, descendants of Aeneas, passed from father to son and finally came to two brothers, Numitor and Amilius. The younger brother, Amilius, obtained the throne and killed his brother's son, Lausus, while out hunting in order to secure the succession to his own son. He forced Rhea Silvia, the sister of Lausus, to become a vestal virgin. Falling asleep near a fountain she was seen by Mars, who fell in love with her.
