ResumoInfection of cells by some pathogenic bacteria triggers host cell apoptosis. Bacteria-induced apoptosis appears to promote an inflammatory response that causes tissue damage and further bacterial colonization. Shigella pathogenesis offers a paradigm for the role of apoptosis in bacterial infections.
