This paper introduces Isaías Alves, a prominent Brazilian educator born in Bahia who criticized the teaching practiced in law, medicine and engineering schools.Isaias Alves supported the creation of universities and technical high school courses in Brazil.He was the founder and the fi rst dean of the Faculty of Philosophy in Bahia, where since 1943 a number of courses were offered including the fi rst and exclusive math teacher education course from which Marhta Dantas graduated in 1947.Under Isaias Alves´s infl uence and pedagogical ideas, Martha Dantas led the process of professionalization of math teachers in Bahia.The paper concludes with a comparison between the math
