The most extensive observations in man have been made during the hormonal therapy of advanced breast cancer (1-15). Alterations of erythropoietic activity consisted of an increase in hemoglobin, hematocrit level, and red blood cell count, and hyperplasia of the erythroid elements of the bone marrow. The observations supported the concept that androgenic hormones are a specific stimulating factor of erythropoiesis. It was suggested that male hormone therapy be employed in the treatment of various refractory anemias (2, 16, 17). Because of...References1.
