ResumoA new secular variation curve for the geomagnetic field intensity for the Tamil Nadu region, India, is obtained using bricks, potteries and tiles of known archaeological ages. The data were obtained with the aid of a large volume zero-field space and an improved version of the astatic magnetometer. The secular variation curve can be used with advantage for archaeological dating. The ages of the recent excavations in Tamil Nadu — Kodumanal, Darasuram, Erukkur and Auroville are established in this way.
