The words spaced above are commonly accepted as a direct quotation from Anaximenes. Some scholars', however, have been more sceptical and, one of them, Reinhardt,2 goes so far as to maintain that das angebliche Fragment des is a vollkommenes Phantasiestiick. The true interpretation, it appears, should lie between these extremes. On the one hand, the use of cpsac, says, does not necessarily guarantee a direct quotation. On the other, the sentence is not in Ionic, which is odd in view of Diogenes Laertius' explicit assertion that Anaximenes x Xp-rc ?Sr. 'IU& &C a7 xacL irWep'T(II,3 DK13A1). It contains, moreover, the word auyxpxre, which is a late compound and could not possibly have been used by Anaximenes3 and it is also doubtful that he could have used the expression 6Xov rov XOC6ov.4
