Estudió las literaturas alemána e inglesa, y ha trabajado como locutora de Radio de Alemán Occidental. Han aparecido cuatro volúmenes de sus poemas líricos: Mortefakt, Gitter mit Augen, Abschüssiges Gelände and Außer Rufweite. Sus poemas han sido publicados también en periódicos y antologías, y su obra ha sido difundida en los canales de radio. Muchos de sus poemas han sido traducidos al español, al portugués, al francés, y al rumano. El poema "Citera" ha sido fijado a la música por Violet Dinescu. She studied German and English literature and has worked as a reader for the West German Radio. Four volumes of her lyric poetry have appeared: Mortefakt, Gitter mit Augen, Abschüssiges Gelände and Außer Rufweite. Her poems have also been published in periodicals and anthologies and have been read on several radio programs. Many of them have been translated into Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Rumanian. The poem "Cythera" was set to music by Violeta Dinescu. Gisela Hemau has held readings in various German cities, in Zurich and in Washington, and at George Mason, McGill, and Colgate Universities. Esther N. Elstun Esther N. Elstun es profesora emerita de alemán en George Mason University.
