ResumoLouis Wirth did not develop a sociological theory, but he made an important contribution to this field. As a student of Park he emphasized the need for relating firsthand experience to both empirical research and theoretical formulations. Wirth's major purpose was to investigate the degree of consensus necessary for the realization of individual freedom, and he sought to realize this purpose through a simultaneous commitment to social action and sociological research.
