Several clinical groups in this country and in Europe have recently reported data obtained after the administration of synthetic somatostatin — the latest of the hypothalamic hypophysiotropic peptides.1 2 3 This issue of the Journal contains an elegant study by Yen and his collaborators on the striking effects of somatostatin in a series of patients with acromegaly. Somatostatin acutely and reversibly inhibits the secretion of pituitary growth hormone and of glucagon and insulin.What is somatostatin?
