Resumo

Scanning electron micrographs (SEM) of the outer surface of immature starfish oocytes treated with the hormone, 1-methyladenine (1-MA), show structural changes of the vitelline layer on which some materials form a fibrous “cap”-like structure at 4 min post treatment. 1-MA also induces the transformation of the vitelline layer from a coarse to a ruffled surface. This transformation may be involved in the block to polyspermy, since addition of 6 × 108 sperm to a suspension of oocytes 5 min after the addition of 1-MA resulted in a significant reduction of sperm bound to the egg surface.
