ResumoA new aldolase from E. coli, the D-tagatose-1,6-bisphosphate-aldolase (TagA), catalyzes the asymmetric addition of dihydroxyacetone phosphate to D-glycerinaldehyde-3-phos-phate, which can be used for the efficient synthesis of the bisphosphate 1 of the rare carbohydrate metabolite D-tagatose. A 4-epimer formed as a byproduct in small amounts can be removed easily from the mixture of products by subsequent specific enzymatic reactions.
