ResumoThe present paper is based on an analytical study to examine the effect of stenosis on vascular deformability and the flow of blood in an artery through the use of a suitable mathematical model. The artery is treated here as an initially stressed elastic cylindrical tube containing a non-Newtonian viscous incompressible fluid (representative of blood) as in experimental observations. The blood flow is assumed to be characterized by the power law model whose consistency varies symmetrically along the radial direction. The effect of the surrounding connective tissues on the motion of the wall has also been incorporated. The shear stresses developed in the arterial lumen and the flow characteristics of blood have been quantified through numerical computations of the resulting expressions by making use of a suitable finite difference technique. The applicability of the model is well illustrated through the exhibition of numerical results based on existing experimental data.
