ResumoVolatile constituents have been characterized from a representative of the Australian formicine genus, Notoncus, and from a representative of the formicine genus, Polyrhachis, largely by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Notoncus ectatommoides is characterized chemically by a narrow range of normal and branched alkanes ranging from 10 to 13 carbon atoms and a preponderance of 2- and 3-alkanones, ranging from 13 to 19 carbon atoms. 1-Undecanol and 1-hexadecanol, and two esters—dodecyl nonanoate and undecanoate—not previously noted from insect secretions, were also present in the total and gaster extracts. 2,5-Dimethyl-3-isopentylpyrazine was found in the heads of N. ectatommoides. The Polyrhachis sp. yielded alkanes ranges from 11 to 29 carbon atoms, including 3- and 5-monomethyl derivatives, 12 to 16 carbon atoms. Predominant constituents were tridecane and pentadecane. Alkenes, ranging from 13 to 28 carbon atoms were also major constituents of the gaster extract.
